The Darkest Timeline on tour
The end is coming... to a city near you! I'm doing a UK book tour this summer
SOME NEWS! I’m launching my new book THE DARKEST TIMELINE in Glasgow in July before I head out to London, and then the Edinburgh Festival in August. Join me for a reading, and a Q&A about the themes of the book.
All events are free to attend, and limited capacity. I’m thrilled to be able to bring the tour to three absolutely amazing independent bookshops. There will be copies for sale on the day of the event, and I’ll be happy to sign any you buy on the day or bring with you.
Because tickets are limited for the Glasgow event, I've announced this early on Substack for subscribers. Tickets for London and Edinburgh will be available soon. I hope you can make it along!
Here’s where you can come and see me:
12 July, Mount Florida Books, Glasgow | Tickets available NOW
10 August, All Good Bookshop, London | Tickets available soon
25 August, Lighthouse Books, Edinburgh | Tickets available soon
About the book
A collection of critical essays that trace the outlines of our dystopian present and our increasingly impossible futures, my book explores apocalyptic themes in literature, film, theory and hard science in an attempt to answer the question... are we in the darkest timeline?
Enter the void
What can you expect from the book, and these events?
If you want to explore the darkest timeline before you buy a copy, here are some links to recent interviews:
I spoke to Jason Myles of This Is Revolution about apocalypse movies and capitalist realism - watch it here.
With Cadell Last of Philosophy Portal, I went into some of the critical theory that influenced the book, including Mark Fisher - watch it here.
I spoke to filmmaker Brett Gregory about the book’s political and social themes for Culture Matters - read or listen here.
I was also the first guest on the brand new Revol Press podcast, Theorize and be Damned. You can watch my chat with founders Mike Watson and Daniel Melo here.
I was profiled by The Book Chronicle, Sam H. Arnold’s blog about new books, and the craft of writing.
Did you know I printed up some bumper stickers? If you DM me here, via X, or on Insta, I’ll send you a couple. If you take a cool dystopian picture of them somewhere, you could win a signed copy of the book!
Our next episode, the first of Season 3, will feature a mini-interview with Revol founder Mike Watson, and some readings from the book. It’s also our first episode available in full for subscribers only. Enter your email below to make sure you’re able to hear the whole thing.
There are interviews, livestreams and appearances still to be announced, so stay tuned for more news.
Some of the essays in The Darkest Timeline originally began life here on Strange Exiles, or in other places:
Meme War was an essay on the cyberpunk author John Barnes, and appears in an evolved form in the book. I interviewed Barnes for Strange Exiles Episode 15.
Episode 13 of Strange Exiles shares a title with the book, and features some of my thoughts on the ‘apocalypse aesthetic’ in films and TV.
An early version of my essay on No Man’s Sky was first published in Sublation Magazine.
A gigantic thank you to everyone who’s bought a copy so far, reached out to interview me, and engaged so thoughtfully with the book’s themes. It’s been beyond humbling to hear that you connect to its apocalyptic, dystopian subject matter. I really cannot wait to talk about these things in person with you this summer.
